Halt the Poso 2 mega dam
Call on the Indonesian government to halt the Poso 2 hydroelectric project that is forcing people from their land and violating their rights.
Residents of Peura Village are attacked by police officers as they try to prevent construction access.Since April 2005, two companies involved in the building of a mega-dam in Indonesia, both owned by the a former Vice President of Indonesia, have been compulsory purchasing land from people around the Sulewana river in Poso, Central Sulawesi to make way for the construction and the displacement it will cause. The project, known as, Poso 2 will affect the lives of up to 2,000 people.
The government and the companies involved have never sought to reach an agreement with the community for the planning and implementation of the project. Productive lands, forests and sources of water are being taken by force in return for 3,000 Indonesian Rupiah per square metre, the same price as a pound (450g) of rice.
On March 12, 2011, the police arrested one villager and threatened many others for blocking the way of construction workers in Peura Village, Poso.
In the week prior to this incident, the military and local police officers attacked residents who were protesting peacefully against the construction of dam infrastructure in their area. In each case the officers took the side of the company behind the project and intimidated or attacked anyone who got in the way.
Please join Friends of the Earth Indonesia /Walhi in calling for this project to be halted until there is certainty that the rights of the local population will be respected, the military presence will be withdrawn and a thorough transparent environmental impact assessment has taken place.
