Radiation

The transfer of energy or sub-atomic particles through the air. The heating of the earth by the sun is an example of radiation.

Recycle

Recycling

To reuse a material by transforming it into new products. Recyclable materials include paper, glass, plastic and tin.

Reduction

The reaction in which an atom, ion or molecule gains an electron. The opposite is called oxidation. (See also Oxidation.)

renewable energy

Energy obtained from sources that are inexhaustible, unlike, for example, fossil fuels, of which there is a finite supply. Renewable sources of energy include wood, waste, geothermal, wind and solar thermal energy.

Renewable natural resources

Resources that have the capacity to be reused. Examples include animals and plants.

River basin

A area of land from which water drains into a river, lake or ocean.
