media volunteer

Based in our international office in central Amsterdam.

Duration: one to three days per week, for at least four months.

Friends of the Earth International (FoEI) is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled volunteer/intern to help with media work.

FoEI campaigns for sustainable and just societies and for the protection of the environment. The Amsterdam-based secretariat supports the work of our international campaigns and the 70 national organisations uniting some 2 million individual supporters. For more information visit www.foei.org


If you have some experience of media work and the ability and willingness to learn fast, we can offer you the chance to gain experience in NGO communications and take on considerable levels of responsibility. You will help evaluating the media impact of FoEI campaigns on issues such as climate and energy, food and agriculture, economic justice and more.

You will be based in our friendly, informal, small international office in central Amsterdam.

This is not a paid position but FoEI can reimburse public transport travel costs to the office within the Netherlands.


The job

Under the guidance of the FoEI media coordinator you will:

* Monitor FoEI press coverage, and help providing analysis of its impact
* Monitor news relating to FoEI campaigns in order to detect media opportunities
* Help deliver ad-hoc media support to FoEI campaigners
* Keep the FoEI media pages on our public website up-to-date
* Keep the FoEI extranet media webpages up-to-date
* Help draft press releases and other press materials as requested and / or proofread

The skills

* At least 6 months international media or NGO communications work experience
* University degree - or University student
* English mother tongue or equivalent
* Knowledge of Spanish or French is an advantage
* Commitment to the values of Friends of the Earth International, and some knowledge of environmental issues
* Self starter able to grasp quickly complex policy issues
* Self motivated and organised
* Strong and proficient communications skills
* Demonstrable website skills, or a clear aptitude for learning quickly
